New Year Fishing News
If you think we have it tough with weather conditions occasionally, spare a thought for our friends at Rammi in Siglufjordur in Northern Iceland.
During December they experienced such a severe winter storm that it knocked out their electricity supply for 2 days. The electricit supply controls the geothermal heating system for the town so they had no heating either. Apparently, it could have been worse because it was only -5C! Fortunately, life returned to normal in time for Christmas.

Tony's Talk - ‘Go Yellow’ ...and support Marie Curie!
SUPPORT Marie Curie by offering something a little different.
Marrowfat peas are not the easiest crop for Farmers to cultivate. As at best they will only produce around 2 tonnes per acre when other crops can produce over 5 tonnes, Farmers have to be encouraged to take on a pea crop especially as agrochemical restrictions in 2020 will make the task even more difficult.

For the 1.4 billion people living in mainland China pork has long been a staple food. As a result, approximately 50% of the World’s pigs reside there. In 2018 outbreaks of the deadly (to pigs) ‘African Swine Fever’, or ASF were first reported. During 2019 this air-borne disease has spread rapidly to the extent that nearly 50% of Chinese pigs have been led to emergency slaughter to try to contain this ASF.

Drywite All Seasons For Golden Chips all Year Round
Very soon Fish & Chip shops will find they are using potatoes which have higher levels of starch which the potato produces to protect itself from the low temperatures of winter.
It is essential for fish fryers to wash this damaging starch off the surface of the chips they prepare. This starch turns into sugar, and, on contact with hot frying mediums, caramelises and turns oil dark and in turn, darkens the chips. Naturally this reduces the life of the frying medium too.

The event which focused on the benefits of sustainable palm oil and which was led by sustainability and conservation experts, took place in Chester Zoo’s lecture hall and featured an audience made up of fish friers, manufacturers, and suppliers to the fish & chip and fast food markets. The purpose of the day was to;
